These sessions are designed to equip primary subject leads with the skills and knowledge to confidently fulfil their leadership role in school. The elements of high-quality teaching and learning in Music will be explored and practical approaches to support colleagues’ development in teaching Music more effectively will be shared. There will be opportunities to consider what making good progress looks like and participants will explore the key skills involved.

Listening and Appraising Music in Primary Settings with Becky Beavis
What does ‘listening and appraising music in a primary setting’ look like? In this session, we will be looking at how we can develop key musical concepts and vocabulary through focused listening. This engaging twilight which is suitable for specialists and non-specialists will include examples of listening playlists and take you through the progression of listening and appraising from EYFS – Y6.

Making the Most of Your Percussion Trolley – Tuned and Untuned Percussion
The use of percussive instruments at primary level music education is important to the development of pupils knowledge and understanding of key musical elements pulse and rhythm. As supported by the Model Music Curriculum published by the DfE in March 2021, performing rhythms accurately and being able to play in time to a pulse are fundamental building blocks in developing a child’s musicianship.
In this session we will explore what to do with the various percussion instruments found in primary school classrooms, building teacher confidence and supporting teachers to introduce percussion instruments to KS1 and KS2 learning. You’ll leave with practical ways of exploring the musical elements with pupils at primary school age.

Teaching Music Tech in a Primary Classroom using YuStudio with Max Wheeler
Music technology offers students new routes into music – which is why we’ve developed YuStudio, a beginner-friendly online music studio, and added it to the Charanga Platform.
This type of music creation software, otherwise known as a DAW, is widely used. YuStudio has all the features you would find on any professional DAW, but because we’ve designed it for use in schools, it’s more accessible and easier to use. It’s also browser-based, so students can continue making music whenever they’re online.
