The ambition of the new National Plan for Music Education is “to enable all children and young people to learn to sing, play an instrument and create music together, and have the opportunity to progress their musical interests and talents, including professionally”.
To help achieve this, schools are recommended to provide:
- Timetabled curriculum music of at least one hour each week of the school year for Key Stages 1-3
- Access to lessons across a range of instruments, and voice
- A school choir and/or vocal ensemble
- A school ensemble/band/group
- Space for rehearsals and individual practice
- A termly school performance
- Opportunity to enjoy live performance at least once a year
Simon Toyne, Executive Director of Music of the David Ross Education Trust and member of the DfE Expert Panel for the National Plan for Music Education, will outline the implications of the National Plan for those leading music in secondary schools. This will include the use of self-evaluation tools and tips on how to create a Music Development Plan.
Above all, this session will be an opportunity to share good practice and practical tips on how to develop music provision in secondary schools, connecting with each other and developing meaningful partnerships.
