There are many progression routes from music education, not just into musical careers, and these stories also show how the wide variety of skills gained from playing an instrument and playing in groups with other people can benefit everyone in many ways, from boosting self-esteem or wellbeing to help with applying for university or having the ability to socialise outside of school.
Music is a great community builder, whether it’s within a school or local area, countywide, national or even international. The Music Service helps train young musicians to be able to take part in ensembles and bands, and connect with other like-minded people from many different backgrounds. Many young players find friends for life, and even though they may not make a career out of music, the unique opportunities the Music Service provide for young players in the first steps of their musical journeys are unforgettable.
- Anna works at BBC Radio Norfolk and plays the trumpet in her spare time.
- Douglas studies Physics at Durham University and conducts his University Wind Band.
- Sophie grew up in Brundall and is now a woodwind tutor for Haringey Music Service and Barnet Education Arts Trust.
- David went to school in Thetford and has played tuba in many international orchestras, jazz groups and on many recordings.
- Olivia plays the saxophone and studies Politics, International Studies and French at Warwick University.
